What Leonardo actually drew — and why it still matters
Around 1490, Leonardo da Vinci sketched a nude man inscribed in both a circle and a square, illustrating proportions described by the Roman architect Vitruvius fifteen centuries earlier. The drawing was anatomy, geometry, and philosophy on a single page — the Renaissance conviction that the human body encodes the proportions of the cosmos. It remains the most reproduced anatomical drawing in history, and the proportions it captures are surprisingly close to modern population averages.
The 10 proportions and what they mean
1. Arm span = Height (the Square). Stretch your arms and you fit a perfect square. Population data confirms this — average arm-span-to-height ratios cluster near 1.00, typically 1.00–1.04 in men and 0.99–1.01 in women. Michael Phelps’s famous 6’7” span on a 6’4” frame (ratio 1.04) shows how even small deviations create athletic advantages.
2. Navel at the Golden Ratio (the Circle). The circle in Leonardo’s drawing is centered on the navel. The ratio of total height to navel height lands near 1.618 — phi, the golden ratio. This isn’t mystical coincidence; it’s a structural consequence of how legs and torso proportions balance in bipedal animals. Your navel should sit roughly 61.8% of your height from the floor.
3. Body = 8 Head Heights. Vitruvius wrote that the body should stand eight heads tall. Most real adults measure 7–7.5 heads, which is why fashion illustration deliberately stretches figures to 8+ to create an idealized look.
4. Hand Length = Face Length. Hold your hand over your face — wrist crease to middle fingertip should roughly match chin to hairline. This ratio averages remarkably close to 1.0 across populations.
5. Foot = 1/7 of Height. Vitruvius specified the foot at one-seventh of total height. The average male foot at about 10.5 inches on a 5’10” frame hits 0.150, close to the 0.143 ideal.
6. Arm = 5/8 of Height. From the shoulder joint to the tip of the middle finger should be five-eighths of total height (0.625). This ensures the arms, when hanging, place the fingertips near mid-thigh.
7. Cubit = 1/4 of Height. The cubit (elbow to fingertip), one of humanity’s oldest units of measure, was defined by Vitruvius as one-quarter of height. At 17–18 inches for an average adult male, this holds remarkably well.
8. Shoulders = 1/4 of Height. Shoulder width at one-quarter of height produces the classic heroic proportion. Real averages sit around 0.23–0.25 depending on frame.
9. Head = 1/8 of Height. A head height of one-eighth of total height (12.5%) is the Vitruvian ideal. Most people measure 12.5–14%.
10. Phi in the Segments. Divide the body at the navel: the ratio of the full height to the navel height should approach 1.618 (phi), and the ratio of navel height to the upper segment should also approach phi. This self-similar scaling is what gives the golden ratio its reputation.

Height: Against a wall, barefoot. Arm span: Arms straight out at shoulder height, back against wall, mark each fingertip. Navel: Floor to center of navel. Head: Chin to top of skull (not hair). Face: Chin to hairline. Hand: Wrist crease to middle fingertip. Foot: Heel to longest toe. Arm: Shoulder joint to middle fingertip. Cubit: Elbow crease to middle fingertip. Shoulders: Bony point to bony point across the back. A helper with a tape measure makes every reading more reliable.
